Connor Finley, 7th Grader at Hudson Middle School, competed against six other students in the North Carolina Association of Soil and Water Districts Speech Contest, on Friday, May 6, in Raleigh. Finley was the only contestant to come to the podium without notes and deliver a perfect speech while engaging the judges and audience and he was declared the state winner!
The NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts annually administers a number of education contests at the district and area levels. Area winners advance to state competitions. The theme this year was, “We All Live in a Watershed.”
Connor will be recognized at the Caldwell County Board of Commissioners Meeting on May 16th.
Each year, Caldwell Soil & Water Conservation District sponsors environmental contests for all students in grades three through nine. Third, fourth and sixth graders draw a poster. Sixth graders also can participate in an essay or computer generated slide show. Seventh and eighth graders present a four to six minute speech and ninth graders compete in the computer generated poster contest.
Caldwell Soil & Water Conservation District held the seventh and eighth grade speech contest on Friday, February 19, at the Caldwell County Public Library Main Branch in Lenoir where Connor Finley was named one of seven school winners that competed for the district winner.
Finley then advanced to the Regional Contest which was held on Thursday, March 17th at the Library where he competed against seven other district winners.
Finley was coached by teachers Misty Key and Tammy Knight of Hudson Middle School. Knight and Key have coached students for the past ten years and have had several successful competitors. In 2007, Trevor Parrish won the Seventh Grade State Speech Contest and in 2013, Daniela Berry placed third in the eighth Grade State Speech Contest.
Caldwell Soil & Water Conservation District works with Caldwell County Public Schools to promote the contests and are very fortunate to receive their support. All contests are directly tied to the specific grade level curriculum.
