Eligibility
North Carolina residents who receive Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, or Work First Family Assistance are eligible to receive a license waiver to fish for free. Children 16 years of age and older are required to have a valid fishing license.
Fishing License Waiver
The license waiver covers statewide inland and coastal recreation fishing for residents which includes public Mountain Trout Waters, fishing in trout waters on game lands, and fishing in joint waters. The waiver is valid for 12 months from the issue date and may be renewed annually at the Department of Social Services office for those who continue to meet the eligibility requirements.
